Can AI agents reach checkout on Shopify stores?
Many can get started. In ARC's saved HTTP checks of Shopify stores, 1,266 of 1,561 (81.1%) returned an agent checkout link (Snapshot 2026-10-12.r3, 12 October 2026.). That link is the step before payment. ARC stops there, so it shows agents can reach checkout, not that they completed checkout. Stores with no completed check stay outside these rates. A missing result is not a no and not a mark against a store.
What each Shopify figure measures
The checkout-link rate counts completed Shopify checks where the cart tool returned a URL for one tested product. ARC stops before payment. It is not a live agent order. The WebMCP rate counts a storefront adapter in the HTML. That is a page marker, not a browser session. Checkout WebMCP is a separate HTML check of checkout tools, and unknown or not-checked stores stay out of that rate. A missing result is not a no. The rates below are counted from ARC open dataset snapshot 2026-10-12.r3 (2026-10-12). They are not copied from a summary.
What Shopify turns on
A UCP profile at /.well-known/ucp, a Storefront MCP server at /api/mcp, and checkout WebMCP tools in the checkout HTML. A cart result is counted on the UCP row. That counting rule is on the methodology page. Checkout WebMCP is HTML detection. The tools require buyer approval. ARC does not place an order.

Why some Shopify stores still fail
A theme, an app, or a bot setting can stop a browser shopper even when the catalog returns a checkout link. ARC records the stop it saw. It does not treat that store as unscored, and it does not treat an unscored store as a failure.

Frequently asked questions
- Can AI agents reach checkout on Shopify stores?
- Many can get started.
- Is agent checkout on by default for Shopify?
- Shopify's help docs say agentic storefronts are on by default for eligible stores. That sentence is Shopify's, not an ARC measurement. ARC cannot see the merchant setting. On saved HTTP checks, 1,266 of 1,561 (81.1%) of completed Shopify stores returned an agent checkout link. Snapshot 2026-10-12.r3, 12 October 2026. A link is not an order. A missing result is not a no and not a mark against a store.
- What is Storefront MCP?
- Storefront MCP is a Shopify endpoint at /api/mcp that lets agents list tools. An answer is a tools list, not an order. In ARC open dataset snapshot 2026-10-12.r3 (2026-10-12), 1,469 of 1,561 (94.1%) of checked Shopify stores had a server that answered. Snapshot 2026-10-12.r3, 12 October 2026. A missing result is not a no.
- Can a Shopify store still block agents?
- Yes. A theme, an app, or a bot setting can stop an agent even when a checkout link comes back. When a store returns a block to ARC's automated HTTP check, the store page records that response. It is a response to ARC's checker, not a finding against the store. Where robots.txt was measured, 11 of 1,560 (0.7%) of checked Shopify stores block answer agents. Snapshot 2026-10-12.r3, 12 October 2026. Unreadable robots files stay out of that rate.
